What’s been happening here at St. Pauls…….

Footloose.

Footloose was a huge success and recieved rave reviews by both the Bolton News and NODA. It was a wonderful show and we would like to thank everyone involved on and off stage for all they did. And we would also like to thank everyone who came to watch it.

Annual Dinner.

Our Annual Dinner also took place after footloose. Everyone had a wonderful time! The theme this year was Black, White and Bling.

We would like to say thank you to ‘Simply Swing’ for their Disco and Entertainment, to Marcus Moore Catering for the wonderful food and also to Martin Pearce for his up close Magic.

The winners of this year’s awards were Graham Cohen (Lillian Fairclough Award) and Robin Armstrong (Chairman’s Award).

Welcome…..

Here at St Paul’s we would also like to welcome some new people. The first of these would be our new NODA Representative Wendy Newton. Wendy came to watch Footloose and we were also thrilled that she joined us at our Annual Dinner. We look forward to her seeing many more of our shows. We would also like to welcome the new Vicar, Fr David Arnold to St. Paul’s Church. We all look forward to meeting him soon.

Brassed Off.

Brassed off is the next play we’ll be doing here at St. Paul’s. Rivington and Adlington Brass Band have agreed to be part of the show and are raring to get going. We very much look forward to working with them. The show will be on from the 4th-8th September. There will be a pre-audition read through on Monday 14th May and the auditions will take place two weeks later.

The Review from The Bolton News;
Would the gentle little village of Adlington be ready for such a raucous night of action?
I can honesty say the answer was a resounding yes.
The fun started at curtain up and continued right until the very end when six very brave men ripped their clothes off with only a hat and some strategically placed lighting to spare their blushes.
There is some nudity and the men do get down to their birthday suits but it is all tastefully done and you could take your mum (as I did) or grandmother and feel perfectly at ease.
This was St Paul’s Players at their rip-roaring best. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as we all cried with laughter from start to finish.
This musical extravaganza remains true to the original film but instead of being set in Sheffield here in England it’s set in Buffalo, New York.
It tells the tale of six “real” men of varying sizes who decide to do “the full monty” to raise some much needed cash.
There are some fine New York accents and some very fine acting in particular Graham Hope as the hapless Malcom MacGregor and real-life stripper Antoni Savage who played Noah Simmons (Horse) who was well deserved of the extra loud applause and cheers he received.
Graham Cohen was hilarious as dance teacher Harold Nichols.
If you wonder how they actually achieve the “full monty” get your tickets and get along to Adlington.
Suffice to say very little is left to the imagination.

Our Annual Dinner was another fabulous night! We had 68 people and we all had such a good time!

We also said goodbye to our NODA rep Colin Magenty at the dinner as he retires in the summer! We’d like to thank Colin for everything he’s done for us and hope he enjoys his retirement.

THE smell of greasepaint, the bustle of the costume department and the lastminute alterations to sets and props — backstage at any theatre can be an exciting place.

And during pantomime season that excitement is multiplied tenfold — oh yes it is!

There are six pantos set to be performed by amateur theatre companies across Bolton in the next two months.

And as rehearsals progress, behind the scenes at the panto is an interesting — and busy — place to be.

Terry Bowden, who has written and directs this year’s Halliwell Theatre Company production of Jack and the Beanstalk said: “It takes a lot of organisation. Luckily I have a decent team who do all the heavy work. I think the most important thing is that everybody enjoys it.

“The biggest challenge is getting the cast together, although luckily there are still a lot of people interested.

Pantos are still very popular in the Bolton area.”

Les Clarke has been stage manager at Trinity Church AODS’ pantomimes for the last eight years. He normally bans the director from being backstage on opening night, as it makes the rest of the crew nervous.

However for this year’s production of Red Riding Hood that will not be possible — as he is the director.

It is the first time Les has taken over the top job at the panto, and he says he could not have managed without having a good team to back him up.

“On the night it’s quite good fun,” he said. “Once you’ve got the sets sorted you can have a good time — the tension’s gone.”

Graham Cohen, who is directing another Jack and the Beanstalk, at St Paul’s Players, in Adlington, says the biggest challenge is making the show different to previous productions.

“I wanted different people — we’ve got a new dame — and choosing the right songs is key,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of pop songs that the kids will recognise, because there’s nothing worse than the moment when the principal boy and girl are singing a love song to each other and you see all the kids get up to go to the loo.”

Are Bolton men too shy for Full Monty?

THEY could leave their hats on. But even with that concession to decency, it seems Bolton’s men are more reserved than they might appear.

St Paul’s Players Adlington are looking for chaps to appear in their production of the musical The Full Monty next year — but so far they have had no volunteers.

Liz Blundell, from the society, said: “I hope they’re not too prudish to come forward — we’ll have a problem if they are!”

The show is based on the hit film starring Robert Carlyle, although the action has been moved from Sheffield to Buffalo, in New York.

The roles which need to be filled include the lead Jerry Lukowski, an unemployed mill worker who will lose custody of his son if he can’t make his support payments to his former wife Pam.

He is joined on stage by his best friend Dave Bukatinsky, another unemployed mill worker, and shy and geeky Malcolm MacGregor.

Completing the “strippers” are handsome Ethan Girard, Noah “Horse” T. Simmons, the curmudgeonly African American retired mill worker and Harold Nichols, the mill workers’ former supervisor.

Liz said: “I don’t know whether people will just turn up on the night. I hope so!”

The show itself will run from March 7 to 12, at Adlington Community Centre.

Once the show is cast the society are also planning on making a Full Monty calendar to help raise funds towards their running costs — and everyone will be getting involved.

On Friday the 3rd September, we attended the BATS (Bolton Amateur Theatre Societies) Annual Awards Night. We we’re very lucky to be nominated in 3 categories; Best Musical- Kes, Best Actor in a Musical- Ryan Quick as Billy in Kes Caper & Best Pantomime- Sleeping Beauty.

Fame was also a huge success! The Cast, Crew and Production team worked tirelessly to create a wonderful show and all their hard work was noticeable on stage. We received great reviews and it was thourally enjoyed by audience and cast alike!

If you would like to be involved in our next production, Jack and the Beanstalk, then the welcome meeting is on Wednesday the 22nd of September at 7:30 in Adlington Community Centre.

Our AGM is also going to be held on Monday the 20th of September.
